Most entry problems are avoidable and happen at check-in, not at the border. Airlines are fined for carrying passengers who will be refused entry, so they enforce the rules strictly. Run these checks before you pay for anything non-refundable.

1. Passport validity: the six-month rule
Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry, and some require blank pages. Others — most of Europe's Schengen Area — require validity of at least three months beyond your intended departure, and that the passport was issued within the previous ten years. Check the specific rule for your destination and your nationality, because it varies by both.
- Count from your entry date, not your booking date.
- Check the issue date too, not just expiry.
- Renewals can take weeks in peak season — start early.
2. Visa or travel authorisation
There are three broad categories: full visa (apply in advance, sometimes in person), electronic authorisation (an online form and a small fee, approved in minutes to days), and visa-free entry. The middle category has expanded a lot — systems such as the US ESTA, Canada's eTA, the UK ETA, and the EU's forthcoming ETIAS all apply to travellers who previously needed nothing at all.

- Approval is not a guarantee of entry; a border officer makes the final call.
- Print or save a copy offline in case you have no data on arrival.
3. Onward and proof-of-funds requirements
Plenty of countries require evidence that you intend to leave: a return or onward ticket, and occasionally proof of funds or a booked address for the first night. Airlines check this at the gate. If your plan is genuinely open-ended, book a cheap refundable onward flight rather than risk being denied boarding.
4. Health and vaccination entry rules
A small number of destinations require proof of yellow fever vaccination, usually if you are arriving from or transiting a country where it is present. Other recommendations — hepatitis A, typhoid, rabies, malaria prophylaxis — are health advice rather than entry conditions, but the appointments need lead time. A travel clinic six to eight weeks before departure is the sensible default.
5. The 48-hour pre-flight check
Two days out, re-run the short version: passport in hand, authorisation approved, first night booked, onward ticket saved, insurance policy number stored offline, and a photo of your passport in a place you can reach without your bag.
