Planning advice that matters
The check-in habit
A single agreed message each day costs nothing and makes silence meaningful. Without it, nobody at home knows whether no news is good news. Pick a time that suits your timezone and keep it even on easy days — the habit is the point.
Solo does not have to mean alone
Free walking tours, cooking classes, hostel dinners and day tours are the standard ways solo travellers meet people, and they work. Booking one in the first two days of each new city changes the texture of the whole stay. The template has a slot for it so it doesn't get skipped.
Arrivals are the risky part
Most solo travel problems happen on arrival: late, tired, unfamiliar, carrying everything you own. Aim to land in daylight, pre-book the first night, and know exactly how you get from the station or airport to the door before you leave home.
Money and documents when there's no one to watch your bag
Split cards and cash across two places, keep a photo of your passport offline and in your email, and carry a cheap secondary card. Solo travel has no built-in backup, so build it into the packing rather than hoping.
